Drag Wig Glossary: Every Wig Term Explained

Wig shopping comes with its own language, and nobody hands you a dictionary. Here's every term you'll meet on a product page, explained in plain English, with real wigs from the shop to show you what each one looks like.

Cap construction

Cap — The base the hair is attached to. It decides how the wig sits, breathes and reads at the hairline.

Lace front — Sheer lace across the front hairline with machine wefts behind it. Gives a realistic hairline at a sensible price. Part at the front only.

Full lace — The entire cap is lace, so you can part anywhere and wear high ponytails or updos. The priciest and most delicate option.

Monofilament (mono top) — Fine sheer mesh at the crown or part with hairs tied individually, so each strand moves separately and the part looks like it grows from skin.

Capless / open weft — No lace, open rows of wefts. Coolest and cheapest, no hairline illusion, so it lives under bangs, hats and big fantasy shapes.

Closure — A small lace panel, usually 4x4 or 5x5 inches, covering the crown. Allows one part, usually middle or slightly off-center.

Frontal — A wider lace panel running ear to ear, typically 13x4 or 13x6. More lace means more parting freedom and deeper swoops.

Half wig — Covers the back and sides while you blend your own hair or a wrapped front. Fast for quick changes.

Lace and hairline terms

HD lace — A finer, thinner lace that melts against more skin tones. Not a size, a quality of the lace itself.

Swiss lace — Soft, fine lace known for comfort and an undetectable finish. More delicate than standard lace.

Lace size (4x4, 7x5, 13x4, 13x6) — The lace panel measured in inches. Bigger numbers mean more parting space.

Knots — Where each hair is tied to the lace. Visible knots look like dots at the scalp.

Bleached knots — Knots lightened so they disappear against the lace. Pre-bleached saves you doing it yourself.

Pre-plucked — The hairline has already been thinned so it looks natural instead of doll-like.

Baby hairs — Short, fine hairs at the hairline, laid down with gel to mimic real growth and soften the edge.

Melting the lace — Blending the lace edge into your skin with adhesive, mousse or a band so no line shows.

Glueless / wear and go — Designed to be worn without adhesive, usually with an adjustable band and pre-cut lace.

Pre-cut lace — The excess lace is already trimmed, so no scissors required before your first wear.

Hair and texture

Synthetic — Man-made fiber. Holds its style after washing, cannot be dyed, and only takes heat if labeled heat-resistant.

Human hair — Real hair. Takes heat, color and a custom cut, moves naturally, needs restyling every wear.

Heat-resistant fiber — Synthetic hair that tolerates low-heat styling. Check the temperature limit before you touch it with an iron.

Density — How much hair is on the cap, given as a percentage. 130% reads natural, 150% to 180% is full and glamorous, 200% and up is full drag volume.

Texture — The hair pattern: bone straight, body wave, deep wave, water wave, kinky curly, kinky straight.

Wefts — Rows of hair sewn onto the cap.

Ombre — A gradual fade from one color to another down the length.

Rooted — Darker color at the roots fading to lighter lengths, which makes the install look grown-in.

Wearing and securing

Wig cap — The stocking or mesh cap worn underneath to flatten your hair and protect your scalp.

Wig grip — A silicone or velvet band around the head that stops the wig sliding, no glue needed.

Adjustable straps — Straps inside the cap that tighten or loosen the fit.

Combs — Small clips sewn into the cap that anchor into your own hair or cap.

Lace adhesive — Glue made for bonding lace to skin. Always pair with a proper remover.

Wig block / head — The stand you style and store the wig on so it keeps its shape.
