How to Measure Your Body for
Hip & Butt Padding (Step-by-Step)

The most common mistake queens make when buying hip pads is guessing their size. The result: padding that’s too small to create the effect you want, or too large to look natural. This guide eliminates the guesswork with a simple, accurate measurement process.

“Measure twice, slay once.”

What You’ll Need

  • A flexible tailor’s measuring tape (not a rigid ruler)
  • Form-fitting underwear or a gaff (measure over these, not over bulky clothing)
  • A mirror or a friend to help
  • A pen and paper to record your measurements

The 4 Key Measurements

1

Natural Waist

Find the narrowest part of your torso — usually about an inch above your belly button. Wrap the tape measure around this point, keeping it parallel to the floor. Don’t suck in or push out. Record this number. This is your waist measurement.

2

Hip Circumference (Natural)

Stand with your feet together. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks — usually about 7–9 inches below your natural waist. Keep the tape parallel to the floor. This is your natural hip measurement.

3

Desired Hip Measurement (Target)

Decide how wide you want your hips to appear. A classic feminine hourglass ratio has hips approximately 10–14 inches wider than the waist. For dramatic drag proportions, many queens aim for 16–20+ inches wider than their waist. Subtract your natural hip from your target hip — that’s how much volume you need to add.

4

Inseam / Rise Length

For shapewear shorts and panties, you’ll also need your rise measurement. Measure from your natural waist down to where you want the garment to end. This ensures the padding sits at the right height on your body. Most hip pad shapewear is designed for a mid-thigh to upper-thigh length.

Pro Tip: The Waist-to-Hip Ratio

The most visually striking drag silhouettes have a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.65–0.70 (meaning hips are roughly 1.4–1.5x the waist measurement). If your waist is 32 inches, aim for hips of 44–48 inches for a dramatic hourglass. Use this as your target when selecting padding volume.

Common Sizing Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring over thick clothing: Always measure in form-fitting underwear or a gaff only.
  • Choosing size by waist alone: Hip pad sizing is primarily about hip circumference and desired volume, not just waist.
  • Ignoring the rise: Padding that sits too low won’t create the right silhouette under dresses and skirts.
  • Going too small “to be safe”: Under-sized padding creates a lumpy, unnatural look. When in doubt, size up.
  • Not accounting for layering: If you plan to wear shapewear underneath, measure over that layer.
