Why Stage Silhouettes Are Different

What looks great in a mirror at home can disappear completely under stage lighting and at performance distance. Stage silhouettes need to be:

Exaggerated: Curves that look dramatic up close look natural from the audience. Go bigger.
Secure: Padding that shifts during a performance is a disaster. Everything needs to stay in place through movement.
Durable: Multiple shows, quick changes, and high-energy performances require products that hold up.
Comfortable enough to perform in: You can't perform well if you're uncomfortable. Find the balance between drama and wearability.

Building a Stage Silhouette

Maximum Hip Width

Pageant-Specific Considerations

Pageant judging happens at close range. Judges will see your silhouette from every angle. This means:

Silicone padding is preferred over foam for its natural look and movement
Seams and edges of padding must be completely invisible under your costume
Your silhouette must look consistent from front, side, and back
Practice walking, turning, and posing in your full padding setup before competition day
Have a backup plan for quick changes between categories
