How to Stop Your Blocked Brows from Lifting
Lifting blocked brows are one of the most common — and most visible — drag makeup failures. The edges of the blocked brow start to peel away from the skin mid-performance, breaking the illusion at exactly the moment you need it most.
The frustrating thing is that lifting is almost always caused by something that happened before the performance even started. Fix the process and the lifting stops.
Why Blocked Brows Lift
1. Oily or moisturized skin before blocking
This is the most common cause. Glue stick adhesion depends on a clean, dry surface. Any oil, moisturizer, or skincare residue on the brow area prevents the glue from bonding properly to the skin. The brow looks fine initially but lifts as soon as heat or sweat is introduced.
2. Layers applied too thick
Thick layers of glue take longer to dry and don't compress the hair as effectively as thin layers. They also create a heavier, more rigid structure that is more likely to peel away from the skin at the edges.
3. Layers not fully dry before the next was applied
Applying a new layer of glue over a layer that hasn't fully dried traps moisture between the layers. This weakens the bond and creates a structure that lifts easily under heat.
4. Not enough powder between layers
Powder between glue layers does two things: it sets each layer and creates a surface the next layer can grip. Without it, the layers don't build up properly and the overall structure is weaker.
5. Sweat during performance
Even a well-blocked brow can lift if sweat gets underneath the edges. The forehead is a high-sweat area, and the edges of the blocked brow are the most vulnerable point.
How to Block Brows That Won't Lift
Step 1: Start with completely clean, oil-free skin
Before blocking, wipe the brow area with a gentle toner or micellar water on a cotton pad. Remove every trace of moisturizer, skincare, and natural oil from the brow and surrounding skin. Let it dry completely before you start.
Do not apply moisturizer or primer to the brow area before blocking. Apply these to the rest of the face only, and avoid the brow zone until after blocking is complete.
Step 2: Apply thin layers only
Each layer of glue should be thin enough to dry within 1–2 minutes. If it's taking longer, the layer is too thick. Thin layers compress the hair more effectively and create a stronger, more flexible bond with the skin.
Step 3: Dry each layer completely before the next
Wait until the glue has gone from purple to fully clear (if using Elmer's) before adding the next layer. Use a cool hairdryer to speed this up. Never apply a new layer over a layer that is still tacky.
Step 4: Press powder firmly between every layer
After each dried layer, press setting powder firmly into the glue with a powder puff. This sets the layer hard and gives the next layer of glue something to grip.
Step 5: Seal the edges
The edges of the blocked brow — particularly the inner and outer corners — are the most likely to lift. After your final glue layer is dry, apply a thin line of skin-safe adhesive (such as spirit gum or lash glue) around the perimeter of the blocked brow and press firmly. Hold for 30–60 seconds.
Step 6: Set with waterproof setting spray before foundation
Once the blocked brow is complete and fully dry, apply a light mist of waterproof setting spray directly over it before moving on to foundation. This adds a protective layer that helps the block resist sweat.
Step 7: Press foundation and concealer — don't drag
When applying foundation and concealer over the blocked brow, always press with a sponge rather than dragging. Dragging can catch the edge of the block and start a lift before the performance even begins.
If Your Brows Start Lifting Mid-Performance
- Don't pull or peel — Pulling a lifting brow makes it worse and can remove the whole block.
- Press it back down — Use a clean finger or a small brush to press the lifting edge firmly back against the skin and hold for 30 seconds.
- Apply a small amount of lash glue to the edge — A tiny amount of lash glue under the lifting edge, pressed flat and held, can re-secure it mid-show.
- Set with powder and concealer — Once re-secured, press concealer over the area and set with powder to blend it back in.
