The Correct Order to Apply Drag Makeup: Step-by-Step
Drag makeup is applied in a specific order for a reason. Each step creates the foundation for the next. Apply them out of order and you'll create problems that are difficult or impossible to fix without starting over.
This guide explains the correct order, what each step does, and why it has to happen when it does.
The Complete Order
Step 1: Skin Preparation
What: Moisturise and prime the face.
Why first: Moisturiser needs time to absorb before primer goes on. Primer needs to dry before foundation. Doing this first gives both products time to settle while you gather your other products.
Apply a lightweight moisturiser to the face. Wait 3–5 minutes. Apply primer to the face, avoiding the brow area if you're blocking brows. Wait until the primer is fully dry before moving on.
Step 2: Eyebrow Blocking
What: Cover natural brows with glue stick in multiple thin layers.
Why second: Brow blocking requires a clean, oil-free surface. It must be done before any foundation or primer touches the brow area. The blocking also needs time to build up layers — starting early gives you time to apply 3–5 layers without rushing.
Apply thin layers of glue stick, letting each dry completely and pressing powder between each layer. 3–5 layers depending on brow thickness.

Step 3: Colour Correction
What: Apply peach or orange colour corrector to the beard shadow area.
Why third: Colour corrector must go on before foundation so it can neutralise the beard shadow underneath. If you apply foundation first, the corrector has nothing to neutralise — it just adds colour on top.
Press peach or orange corrector over the beard area with a damp sponge. Set with powder before moving to foundation.

Step 4: Foundation
What: Apply full-coverage foundation across the entire face.
Why fourth: Foundation goes over the colour corrector (which is now set) and creates the even base that everything else is built on. It must go on before concealer, contour, and eyeshadow.
Apply in thin layers with a damp sponge, pressing rather than dragging. Build 2–3 thin layers for full coverage. Set each layer with powder before the next.
Step 5: Concealer
What: Apply full-coverage concealer for additional coverage and highlighting.
Why fifth: Concealer goes over foundation to add targeted coverage where needed and to highlight specific areas. Applying it before foundation would mean foundation goes over the top and covers the highlighting effect.
Press concealer under the eyes, over the beard area, on the nose bridge, and on the cupid's bow. Set with powder.
Step 6: Set with Powder (Baking)
What: Set the entire base with loose powder. Bake high-movement areas.
Why sixth: The base must be completely set before any colour products go on. Powder contour applied over an unset base sinks into the foundation and creates muddy, undefined results. Setting creates a surface that colour products sit on top of cleanly.
Press powder firmly over the entire face. Apply a generous layer over the beard area, under-eyes, and T-zone and leave for 5–10 minutes (baking). Dust away excess.

Step 7: Contour
What: Apply matte powder contour to reshape and define features.
Why seventh: Contour goes on after the base is fully set. The powder base gives the contour something to grip and keeps it clean and defined rather than muddy.
Apply cool-toned matte contour to the cheek hollow, sides of the nose, jaw, and forehead. Blend only the edges.

Step 8: Highlight
What: Apply highlight powder to the high points of the face.
Why eighth: Highlight goes on after contour so you can see the full effect of the contour and place highlight precisely in relation to it.
Apply luminous highlight to the top of the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, cupid's bow, and center of the forehead.
Step 9: Eyeshadow
What: Build the eye look with eyeshadow.
Why ninth: Eyeshadow goes on after the base is complete so any fallout can be cleaned up without disturbing the base. Some performers do eyes first and then apply foundation over fallout — both approaches work, but eyes-after-base is more beginner-friendly.
Apply transition shade in the crease, lid shade on the lid, and blend. Build depth gradually.

Step 10: Eyeliner
What: Apply liner to the lash line and extend the eye shape.
Why tenth: Liner goes on after eyeshadow so you can clean up and define the edges of the shadow with a precise line.
Apply black gel liner along the upper lash line. Extend with a flick at the outer corner. Apply to the waterline if desired.
Step 11: False Lashes
What: Apply false lashes.
Why eleventh: Lashes go on after liner so the liner creates a clean surface for the lash band to adhere to and hides the band once applied.
Apply glue to the lash band, wait 30–60 seconds for it to become tacky, then place from the center outward. Press and hold for 30–60 seconds.

Step 12: Draw New Brows
What: Draw new brows in the desired position over the blocked area.
Why twelfth: Brows go on after the eye look is complete so you can position them in relation to the finished eye. Drawing brows before the eye look can result in brows that don't work with the final eye shape.
Use a brow pomade and fine angled brush to draw new brows in the desired position, shape, and height.
Step 13: Lips
What: Line and fill the lips.
Why thirteenth: Lips go on near the end so any smudging during the rest of the application doesn't ruin the lip look.
Apply lip liner to define and slightly overline the shape. Fill with lipstick. Blot and reapply for longevity.
Step 14: Final Setting
What: Apply waterproof setting spray over the completed face.
Why last: Setting spray is the final protective layer over everything. It must go on last so it seals the entire completed face.
Apply 2 coats of waterproof setting spray, letting the first dry before the second. Apply a third coat immediately before going on stage.
