How to Wear Hip Pads Under Dresses, Gowns & Bodysuits
Getting the padding right is only half the job. The other half is making sure it's invisible under your costume. This guide covers how to wear hip pads under every type of drag outfit — from tight bodysuits to full ballgowns — without visible lines, shifting, or bulk.
"The best padding is the padding nobody can see — but everyone can feel."
The Golden Rule: Smooth Transitions
The biggest mistake queens make is letting the edge of their padding show through their costume. Whether it's a visible ridge under a bodysuit or a lump under a gown, the fix is always the same: smooth the transition between your padding and your natural body. The tips below cover how to do this for every costume type.
By Costume Type
Tight Bodysuits & Catsuits
The most unforgiving costume type. Use seamless padded shapewear with no visible edges. Silicone pads worn inside shapewear (not directly against skin) reduce edge visibility. Avoid thick foam pads — they create ridges. Test under bright light before performing.
Fitted Dresses & Gowns
Fitted styles show your silhouette clearly — which is exactly what you want. Use padded shapewear that extends at least 2 inches beyond the widest point of your padding so there's no visible edge. High-waist styles prevent the waistband from showing above your dress hem.
A-Line & Flared Skirts
The most forgiving silhouette for padding. The flare starts at the hip and hides everything below. You can use more dramatic padding here without worrying about visible edges. Focus on getting the hip width right — the skirt will do the rest.
Ballgowns & Full Skirts
Maximum forgiveness. The volume of the skirt hides all padding. Focus on getting the hip width right at the waist level so the skirt flares dramatically from the correct point. You can layer aggressively here without any visibility concerns.
Mini Skirts & Short Hemlines
The shorts cut of your shapewear must end above the hemline of your skirt. If your shapewear shorts are visible below your skirt, size up or choose a panty-cut style. Test by sitting, bending, and moving before performing.
Sheer & Mesh Fabrics
Sheer fabrics reveal everything underneath. Use seamless, skin-tone shapewear that matches your costume lining. Avoid foam pads with visible seams. Silicone pads worn inside seamless shapewear are the most invisible option under sheer looks.
Preventing Shifting During Performance
- Test before show night: Do your full routine at home in your complete costume. If anything shifts, fix it before you're on stage.
- Use the right size: Shapewear that's too loose will shift. Too tight and it rolls. The right size stays in place. See our sizing guide.
- Secure adhesive pads properly: Press firmly and hold for 30 seconds. Test the bond before putting on your costume.
- Layer strategically: Shapewear worn over a gaff base layer is more stable than shapewear worn directly against skin.
- High-waist styles stay put: High-waist shapewear anchors at the waist and doesn't roll down during movement.
The Layering Order
- Gaff or compression base layer (directly against skin)
- Padded shapewear shorts or panties (over the gaff)
- Waist cincher if needed (over the shapewear)
- Adhesive silicone pads if layering (on top of shapewear, before costume)
- Costume (over everything)
